THE JOURNEY

Many people find themselves struggling to maintain balance during periods of adjustment or following a traumatic event. Individuals may feel stress, panic, worry, irritability, sadness, low motivation, poor concentration, and sleep disturbance among other symptoms. These are normal reactions to an extremely difficult or traumatic event. We all need a safe space to ground our energy and find stillness.

I believe that the strength, willingness and courage to change is an honorable virtue. I consider my role as a therapist a sacred privilege to journey along side of a person toward true and lasting change. I will journey beside you and guide you with warmth and a calming spirit, along with sound clinical knowledge and experience to provide you with a place to experience compassionate truth that you ultimately find within yourself. I believe that the client-therapist relationship involves ongoing collaboration to ensure mutual understanding and progress.

I bring a holistic, strengths-based approach to our work together. We start where you are, identify your innate capacities, and begin to deconstruct and remove the roadblocks that interfere with your true destiny.

ANXIETY

Anxiety is a normal emotional reaction.  It is one of the most basic human emotions and it's purpose is to protect us from harm.  But sometimes this normal emotion can become overwhelming and unbearable.  Everyone faces difficult situations or life challenges such as finances, relationship difficulties, health problems, or stress at work.   For some, constant or excessive worry disrupts their daily activities and quality of life.  This can cause difficulty sleeping, excessive worry about what others think, difficulty concentrating, and irritability.  For others, panic or a specific fear can disrupt their lives.  This can cause physical symptoms such as chest pain, muscle tension, or shortness of breath.   If you are experiencing any of these symptoms you are not alone.  Anxiety disorders are common and 1 in every 10 Americans will suffer with anxiety at some point in their lives.

Fortunately, anxiety disorders can be treated using cognitive behavioral techniques.  Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is an evidenced-based treatment.  That means that it has been scientifically proven effective in treating anxiety.  CBT primarily focuses on the present rather than the past and addresses the negative thoughts that are affecting your emotions.  Using cognitive behavioral techniques, you will learn to identify the negative thoughts influencing your emotions.  Once identified, they can be changed.  Replacing thoughts that are harmful to your happiness with thoughts that allow you to live a fulfilling life is a common goal of cognitive behavior therapy. Together we can achieve this goal.

DEPRESSION

Most people have felt sad or depressed at some point in their lives.  Depressed feelings can be a normal reaction to a life change or loss in your life.  But when these feelings of sadness last for an extended period of time it can interfere with your daily life.  Many people suffering with depression feel hopeless.  Depression can cause irritability, loss of interest in pleasurable activities, a lack of motivation, difficulty concentrating, and disturbances in your sleep.  Feelings of worthlessness or guilt are also common emotions associated with depression.  There are many life events that may lead to depression such as a divorce or relationship difficulties, a death, financial strain, a move, or a life change such as becoming a new parent.  Over 15 million people are affected by depression in the United States.

Depression is a common problem and during the past few years very effective treatments have been developed.  Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is among the treatments that have been extensively evaluated and shown to be effective through research.  CBT primarily focuses on the present not the past and addresses negative thinking that may be effecting your ability to achieve your goals and improve your mood.  CBT follows the theory that thoughts effect our emotions.  For example, if you have a negative thought about yourself than you will have a negative emotion.  In contrast, if you have a positive thought about yourself you will have a positive emotion.   By focusing on those negative thoughts we can work together to challenge them and create more positive thoughts leading
to a positive way of living.

SOLUTION FOCUS THERAPY

Solution Focus Therapy is a goal-directed collaborative approach to psycho-therapeutic change that is conducted through direct observation of clients' responses to a series of precisely constructed questions.

Solution-focused brief therapists believe clients have the potential and skills to make the changes they want in their lives. They may just need a little help identifying these skills and implementing them. Solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT) places focus on a person's present and future circumstances and goals rather than past experiences. In this goal-oriented therapy, the symptoms or issues bringing a person to therapy are typically not targeted.

COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY

Cognitive behavioral therapy is a short-term, goal-oriented psychotherapy treatment that takes a hands-on, practical approach to problem-solving. Its goal is to change patterns of thinking or behavior that are behind people's difficulties, and so change the way they feel.  (How does my thinking and attitude impact my experience?)

The underlying concept behind CBT is that our thoughts and feelings play a fundamental role in our behavior. Through our life experience we often find that we have developed ” faulty beliefs” which lead us to problematic behaviors that can negatively affect all areas of our lives.  It is the goal of CBT to change those faulty beliefs so that healthy behaviors and relationships develop.

COGNITIVE PROCESSING THERAPY

Cognitive processing therapy (CPT) is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy that has been very effective in reducing symptoms of PTSD and other trauma that have developed after experiencing a variety of events including child abuse, combat, first responder trauma, rape, addiction and natural disasters. CPT helps individual learn how to challenge and modify unhelpful beliefs related to the trauma. In so doing, the individual creates a new understanding and conceptualization of the traumatic event so that it reduces its ongoing negative effects on current life. It is a type of therapy that helps those who have suffered from a traumatic event reshape their thought process to live a happier life

ACCEPTANCE & COMMITMENT THERAPY

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy or ACT, pulls from both CBT and DBT, challenging thoughts and distortions while practicing mindfulness, distress tolerance, and emotion regulation. ACT is more process-based than CBT and DBT which are both skills-based, and it is more client-driven. A basic assumption of ACT is that suffering is a normal and unavoidable part of human experience and that it is actually people’s attempts to control or avoid their own painful experiences that lead to much long-term suffering and what doesn’t work in people’s lives. ACT helps people learn ways to let go of the struggle with pain, be more mindful, get clarity on what really matters to them, and to commit to living full, vibrant lives.

EYE-MOVEMENT DESENSITIZATION AND REPROCESSING (EMDR)

What is EMDR?

EMDR is a powerful treatment that facilitates the processing of unprocessed memories associated with emotional and psychological distress. It is a treatment that uses bilateral stimulation (either through eye movements, tapping or sounds) to process memories to completion so that they no longer possess the power to create disturbing symptoms.

What are unprocessed memories?

Unprocessed memories are memories that are stored in the memory circuit of the brain in a way that is highly disturbing; with the thoughts, images and bodily sensations that were present at the time of the event still intact. Trauma is not defined by the magnitude of the event, but by how the memory is stored in the memory circuit. By contrast, processed memories seem to fade into the background and are not associated with much disturbance when recalled. EMDR facilitates the processing of traumatic memories so that when they are recalled, they do not possess the power to re-traumatize or stimulate the same negative response.

What types of problems can EMDR treat?

  • disturbing memories

  • PTSD

  • chronic pain

  • abuse

  • complicated grief

  • performance anxiety

  • panic attacks

  • phobias

  • anxiety

  • eating disorders

  • addiction

  • substance abuse

  • body dysmorphic disorder

  • neglect

How does EMDR work?

EMDR seems to have a direct effect on the way that the brain processes information. Normal information processing is resumed, so following a successful EMDR session, a person no longer relives the images, sounds, and feelings associated with the event. The bilateral stimulation used in EMDR is similar to eye movement in REM sleep, which is believed to be responsible for memory integration.

What happens in an EMDR session?

In your first session we will take a thorough history and decide what memory to target for treatment. It is not necessary to talk at length about the memory, which is one of the advantages of EMDR. You will be asked to think of an image that best represents the memory and to identify a corresponding emotion and body sensation. With that in mind, the therapist performs a series of bilateral stimulation (usually eye movements). You will be asked to notice what comes up for you during the eye movement. You will be reminded not to discard anything that comes up or judge it as unimportant. The eye movements are continued until negative feelings diminish and are replaced by positive feelings; for example, "I made the best decision at the time". It is common to experience heightened emotions while focusing on the trauma, but most people report a significant reduction in negative symptoms at the end of the session.
